X-Phile on X-Files
An introspective and honest, albeit ramnbling obervation from a devoted X-Phile meant to discuss all things X-Files for all those fellow X-Philes out in fandom or even for the newbies. MOTW, Mytharc, synopsis, and upcoming movie updates--it's all here. Dare I say this is your one stop shop for all things X, if you dare to sit through an hour or so of odd musings.
IWTB review II post anger & some Mulder and Scully lovin'
(745 downloads)Download this episode (67 min)
A two part episode to further clarify and justify the reasons behind my discontent with the IWTB movie. (The second viewing was somewhat cathartic) After an initial heat of the moment recording, I realized I could be more objective--so here you go. See or rather hear again: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Let me reiterate that the MSR was in grand form or ace as they say across the pond. If anything, these two lovable kids make the movie worthwhile and offer a bittersweet send off to the fans.
I've been promising an episode about what I love about Mulder and Scully. Here's a brief stab at it. JJ Abrams, Michael Bay, Judd Apatow--eat your hearts out, you can never touch these two. Finally, it's a clarification of why this X-Phile is a life-long, fully committed die-hard fan and gives nothing but props to the show (but I still have to call it when they muck up--which they do on occasion).
Just realized I forgot to discuss the Easter egg treats. Alas, I will need a third episode for IWTB movie commentary and misc. observations...

Saturday, Jul 26, 2008I want to Believe movie review: D'oh!

Just like Homer Simpson would say after a bone headed move: D'Oh! (And that's putting it mildly).
So after two viewings of this movie and lackluster reviews all I can say is that now more than ever I don't believe in Chris Carter anymore. I feel shortchanged, abused, and massively let down. Was the movie dreadfully horrid? No, but it didn't live up to the "it's one scary mother..." that we were being told. Despite the fact that it was as PG-13 rating, it was pretty lite on the gruesomeness. I appreciated this movie for its intentions of addressing questions about morality, free will, and redemption; however, I despise it for its execution. The fleshing out of the plot was mediocre at best. The only saving grace? Our knights in shining armor: Mulder and Scully. While Duchovny was great and got to do a lot of action scenes, Anderson really got to sink her teeth into some meatier dramatic moments. These two are the only ones that didn't let us down. I officially hate 20th Century Fox now and am also developing a massive dislike for the TDK and all things Judd Apatow. In the end this movie isn't bad, but it ain't X-Files worthy either. Chris and Frank, you messed up royally here. Way to blow this opportunity. Let me put it out there: there will be NO 3rd X-Files film, and if the opportunity ever arises, I hope GA and DD turn it down! Watch the film at least once. In truth, it does improve a tad upon a second viewing.
Just as a final note to fans: stay until the end of the credits (which Unkle's Broken sounds awesome in surround sound) to see a cute and unexpected farewell for fans. I just heard Portishead's Sour Times. Part of the lyrics are "Nobody loves me it's true. Nobody loves me like you..." That perfectly shows how critics miss out on what we the fans get. We keep loving Mulder and Scully better than anyone can or ever will. RIP X-Files, you will be missed!

Thursday, Jul 24, 2008X-Files Season 8: regrets & musings
(570 downloads)Download this episode (70 min)
So here's season 8 and much to my chagrin, I had to do a semi-coherent recap of what happened during this travesty of a season. Let's see: Mulder is still abducted, Doggett is partnered up with Scully, Scully is pregnant forever, Replicants are the new invaders, Mulder is dead, Monica Reyes (shudders) is introduced, guess what? Mulder's not dead, Scully has baby finally, and I forget the rest. Bad season but still slightly better than season 9. Watch it at your own risk. At least the shippers sort of liked it. Coming up next season: dead beat Mulder and Scully drops another 40 IQ points and cries every 5 minutes. What the hell happened to the Mulder and Scully I knew. and who are these impostors?

Another year, another season. Season 6 starts off on new turf (CA) and a new "feel". While there were some notable episodes in this season, it was lackluster both in standout storytelling, an area in which it had previously excelled, and completely annihilated the mythology of the last 5 seasons. What happened Chris? Did you lose your footing? On a fun note, we do get DD's directorial debut in the Unnatural (which I accidentally skipped over in the ep.), cutesy MSR stories almost straight out of fan fiction heaven, and hmmm that's about it. Check it out, it's a good relatively solid season, but does occasionally verge on mediocrity for X-Files standards.

The sun is setting on the empire of the X-Files, so enjoy the beauty while it lasts! Yes my friends, this is the last grand season of the show before it went "all Hollywood" in California. This is the last season of coherent mythology stories, scary episodes, and the eerie enviornment of Vancouver that we've all come to love. With this season comes the resolution to Scully's terminal illness, Mulder's refueling of his beliefs, a new form of resistance, and even more reasons to hate Krycek. Last but not least, let's not forget that this is the season that gives us: 1) Kung Fu Scully & Mulder with his dirty nurses 2) Bad Blood ('nuff said) 3) the Post-Modern Prometheus. Can any more surprises be hurled at an X-Phile? Wasn't season 4 shocking enough? Nah, you ain't seen nothing yet--and that essentially, exactly the way it happened.
